Revealing the true chirality of molecules
In chiral nanophotonics, chirality transfer has been widely utilized for molecular sensing. Typically, dielectric or plasmonic metasurfaces are employed as surface-based sensors to interact with chiral molecule solutions and enhance circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy. The resulting CD resonance peak of the molecules is observed to shift towards the metasurface's resonance, serving as a key signature of these sensing schemes. Both chiral and achiral metasurfaces have shown promise in detecting molecular chirality, with successful differentiation of enantiomeric pairs. However, a significant challenge remains in distinguishing mixtures of chiral molecules with similar handedness and molecular weight at low concentrations. In this talk, I will present our approach using diffractive metasurfaces to identify chiral molecule solutions with the same handedness.
