Opportunities for Leveraging Nature-Based Solutions for Climate Resilience in Guatemala City: A Policy Perspective

Guatemala City is exposed to climate hazards, including landslides, flooding, heat islands, and drought. The territory also faces other significant vulnerabilities resulting from historical environmental mismanagement, inequality, and urban structure, as well as demographic factors. In this context, nature-based solutions (NBS) may provide multiple benefits, furthering the city’s sustainable development and promoting its climate resilience. Drawing on the case of Guatemala City and perspectives of local policymakers, we explore how integrating principles of NBS into urban policy provides opportunities for increasing local adaptation to climate change. The article presents conceptual and strategic frameworks for urban planning in the Municipality of Guatemala and explores existing and emerging policy areas in which NBS may be effectively incorporated. We also show how researchers and knowledge brokers have helped the local government understand the importance of addressing ecosystem services, risks, and vulnerabilities in urban planning and develop more effective mechanisms for achieving climate resilience.
