Harnessing Community Engagement to Reduce River Pollution: A Case Study of Collaborative Initiatives Along the Cikapundung River in Bandung City, Indonesia
Background: Urban rivers worldwide, including the Cikapundung River in Bandung City, Indonesia, face growing challenges because of pollution. To address this issue, our research explores the potential of collaborative citizen engagement in co-producing data, conducting research, and generating knowledge aimed at mitigating the worsening waste problem along the Cikapundung River. Methods: Employing a mixed-methods approach, we engage citizens, local authorities, and researchers in a participatory process. Through interviews, community surveys, and participatory workshops, we document local knowledge and perceptions concerning river pollution. Simultaneously, we develop strategies for behaviour change and waste reduction by collaboratively generating insights and solutions. Results: Our study reveals that co-production, involving citizens as active agents of change, can play a transformative role. By fostering a sense of shared responsibility and empowerment, we have seen the emergence of innovative waste management practices. These practices include community-led clean-up drives and educational campaigns, which collectively aim to change behaviours and reduce waste at its source. Conclusion: Collaborative citizen engagement holds significant promise in addressing the escalating waste issue in the Cikapundung River. It enhances community ownership, inspires sustainable practices, and contributes to a cleaner and healthier urban environment. This research underscores the importance of bridging local wisdom with scientific insights to combat riverine pollution.
