From Fiction to Reality: The ‘WALL-E’ Paradigm in Modern AI Ethics and Society
INTRODUCTION “WALL-E” was a far-sighted cinematic paragon that, though set in a fictional, dystopian far future, impactfully reflects some of the challenges and potential dangers that our society might face as we dive deeper into the potential of artificial intelligence (AI). The movie was released in 2008; at that time, the story line seemed too far-fetched. In the movie, the earth has become uninhabitable due to overexploitation of the earth and its resources, leaving it in ruins and a pile of garbage, devoid of plants and other forms of life. Humans have left desolate uninhabitable Earth, surviving in an outer space habitat where their every need and desires are served for by advanced AI technology and robots controlled by AI. This dependency has led to a profound loss of physical capabilities, health, thinking, and, more importantly, a detachment from the very essence of human experience: the tactile, the effortful, and the authentically interpersonal.[1] Current scenario As we have arrived in the era of a technological revolution, with AI poised to revolutionize every facet of our lives, this movie’s storyline seems more relevant than ever. Advancements in AI at such magnanimous levels promise untold benefits, from revolutionizing healthcare with personalized medicine to transforming education and industry. However, there is a thoughtful question that “WALL-E” brings to the mind: In our pursuit of convenience and efficiency through AI, are we at risk of losing our identity, health, and some integral parts of our humanity?[2] TALE OF AI IN THE LENS OF WALL-E The scenario depicted in “WALL-E” might sound extreme, but it serves as a powerful warning for the potential consequences of an overdependence reliance on AI. The humans in the film have given over not only their responsibilities but also their passions, curiosities, and joys of physical exertion to machines. This brings us to a critical turning point in our real-world scenario on AI: the importance of maintaining a harmonious balance where technology enhances rather than supplants the human experience.[1] This gives an impression of one of the many catastrophic possibilities that could occur due to the overuse and dependence on AI and technology. BALANCING AI AND HUMANITY The ethical consideration of AI’s growth is vast, complex, and beyond control. As AI becomes more integrated into our daily lives, how do we ensure that it augments rather than diminishes our human capabilities? How do we preserve the qualities that define our humanity, curiosity, resilience, and the capacity for physical and intellectual effort? Moreover, how do we ensure that AI does not increase societal divides but rather works toward an inclusive and equitable future for all?[3,4] These issues open a Pandora’s box of issues as who will monitor and restrict AI development, implementation, and use. Also, there is a possibility that generative AI itself can become competent enough for its own development and progression to catastrophic levels without human intervention, supervision, or control. Also considering all weapons of mass destruction are under the control of technology, if somehow AI takes control of these, it could lead to unimaginable destruction. DECEPTIVE POTENTIAL OF AI In this thought-provoking review, contemporary manifestations of AI’s ability to deceive are evident, highlighting recent research findings and the ethical implications therein. It emphasizes the dual nature of AI deception, elucidating both its perilous risks and potential benefits across various domains.[5] Wisdom gleaned The lesson from “WALL-E” is clear: Technology, in all its awesome potentials, should not overpower the fundamental aspects of humanity; it should not diminish our physical health, nor should it impede our ability to engage deeply with our world and with each other. It should not hamper our power of thinking. As we navigate this new era, it is important that we approach AI development with a keen eye of ethical responsibility, ensuring that these technologies are utilized to enrich human life, not to detract from it. A common body like UN should be formulated with worldwide participation. This body should lay down strict rules for moderation of AI development and implementation to prevent unwarranted, unwanted events in future. There should be a clear line on how much and by whom what modalities of AI can be used. Its use should be restricted significantly in schools and colleges to prevent use by students. Over-use of AI for mental work can make the students lose the abilities of brain like thinking, creativity, and logical reasoning. What we already are seeing is use of AI in doing calculations, homework, statistics, creative writing, and so on. CONCLUSIONS “WALL-E” is a story set in a far, imaginary future; the questions it raises about our relationship with advanced technology and AI are of significant concern and pressing. It is a call to take into account for all stakeholders in AI, developers, policymakers, and users to moderate the development of AI, which fosters a future where technology serves humanity and not the other way around.
