Effectiveness Of Honey In Extraction Socket Healing -A Randomized Controlled Trial

BACKGROUND -Extraction of tooth leads to many postoperative complications such as inflammation, drysocket, edema, and pus discharge. The use of conventional medicine are often associated with  side effects and increased risk of drug toxicity limited to prescribe during pregnancy. The use of natural medicine  has been made possible in dentistry. One such natural substance made by Honey bees, Honey has excellent healing properties and reduces postoperative pain and swelling which is also safe to use in pregnancy and  Pediatric patients. AIM-To assess the effectiveness of Honey in wound healing of atraumatic extraction socket of third molar. MATERIALS AND METHODS-A Total of 30 patients undergoing third molar extraction were randomly divided into two groups .Group A Consists of 15 patients and they were treated with  honey soaked in haemostatic sponge in post-extraction socket and Group B consists of 15 patients and they were prescribed with antibiotics and analgesics postoperatively. Patients were recalled for follow up on postoperative 3rd ,5th and 7th day and they were assessed with Visual Analog Scale (VAS )and Landry ,Turn, Bell and Howley scale for soft tissue healing. RESULTS: Patients treated with Honey has statistically significant in VAS scores,Landry Turnbell and Howley scale, swelling assessment. CONCLUSION: This study demonstrates the effectiveness of honey in promoting wound healing after tooth extraction. Honey has no side effects. The results suggest that honey may be a useful adjunct to conventional treatments for post-operative wound care.
