On Writing "Ground-up Glass"
Abstract: "Ground-up Glass" is an excerpt from a work-in-progress memoir that shows a person dependent on prescription opiates, and the doctors who prescribe them. The piece takes place in 2016 whenthe U.S. government put more regulations on the drug and the doctors prescribing them, causing the author to experience severe pain, fear, and outrage. While getting the excerpt workshopped, the author noticed that the emotional impact was not transparent and needed a deeper meaning. After changing tenses and making many revisions, the author had to realize she was privileged and ignorant during this time in her life, but she knows that is the point of the memoir.
