Hills, Birds, Bones

Abstract: In this personal essay, an anthropologist explores love, loss, and regret as she braids the unexpected death of her mother in Colorado with the experience of hearing a myth during her fieldwork in the mountains of Nepal two decades earlier. Though separated by time, cultural and linguistic differences, and thousands of miles, the two events illuminate each other in surprising ways.
