Inherited Arrhythmias: New Insights and Recent Advances
Abstract Inherited arrhythmias are a group of disorders, characterized by abnormal electrical activity in the echocardiogram (ECG), without an underlying structural abnormality of the heart. The rhythm disturbances may have their onset with or without specific triggers. The age of presentation is highly variable, ranging from antenatal onset presenting as sudden fetal demise to later onset (from childhood to adult life). Because of their genetic heterogeneity, phenotypic variability and incomplete penetrance, diagnosis, prophylactic management, and counseling can be very challenging. This article provides an overview about the molecular basis, clinical aspects, diagnostic approach, and management of inherited arrhythmias, including recent advances in the field.
