Modeling and Control Strategy of PMSG-Based Ocean Wave Energy Conversion Systems

A comprehensive investigation into clean and sustainable energy sources is imperative to address current energy challenges. Among these, ocean wave energy emerges as a highly abundant and promising alternative. This paper proposes a strategy for harnessing ocean wave energy through the utilization of buoyancy—a structure composed of multiple floating segments oriented vertical to the wave direction—and a Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator (PMSG). A model has been designed in MATLAB/Simulink to simulate a wave energy converter incorporating a PMSG coupled with buoyancy. The primary objective of this model is to analyze the system’s response under various conditions, ensuring a smooth and stable operation. The proposed control strategy encompasses a voltage regulation approach aimed at guaranteeing a uniform load operation. Simulations conducted using MATLAB/Simulink corroborate the efficacy of the proposed model, showcasing the efficiency of the control method in energy conversion and ensuring consistent load connection. Furthermore, validation of simulation data was conducted through the implementation of a laboratory hardware prototype, with particular emphasis on the voltage control section synchronized with the rotation of the PMSG. This research contributes a thorough investigation of the modeling and control methodology of a PMSG-based ocean wave energy conversion system.
