Authorial Interventions in the Manuscripts of Fernando Pessoa’s<i>The Duke of Parma</i>

<i>This article aims to provide a general overview of the material characteristics of the manuscripts constituting Fernando Pessoa’s unpublished work</i> The Duke of Parma <i>and the typology of autograph interventions that can be observed. Analysis of the piece’s genesis will reveal valuable information on Pessoa’s creative modus operandi, while also raising important questions in terms of editorial treatment, given, for example, the frequent presence of alternative variants on which the author never made a definitive decision, or ambiguous authorial indications concerning the ordering of the textual content. Thus, a critical-genetic reflection on the manuscripts of this unpublished project represents a crucial stage in the future development of editorial and critical work on the tragedy.</i> <i>O artigo visa apresentar uma panorâmica geral sobre as características materiais dos manuscritos que constituem a obra inédita</i> The Duke of Parma<i>, de Fernando Pessoa, e sobre a tipologia de intervenções autógrafas observáveis. Para além de fornecer informações relevantes sobre o</i> modus operandi <i>de Pessoa no processo de composição da obra, a observação das intervenções autorais nos manuscritos de</i> The Duke of Parma <i>levanta importantes questões também no âmbito editorial, dada, por exemplo, a presença não infrequente de variantes alternativas, sobre as quais o autor não chegou a tomar uma decisão definitiva, ou de indicações autorais ambíguas no que diz respeito à ordenação do conteú- do textual. Assim, uma primordial reflexão de natureza crítico-genética sobre os materiais que constituem este inédito projeto pessoano poderá representar uma etapa importante para o futuro desenvolvimento de trabalhos editoriais e críticos sobre a obra.</i>
