A Multifunctional Wind Power Conversion System With Sensorless Operation and Power Quality Improvement Features

The paper proposes a model reference adaptive system with fourth order generalized integrator (MRAS-FOGI) for power quality improvement in wind power systems. With the effect of a model-reference speed estimator in conjunction with the generalized integrator, the system offers robustness towards significant fluctuations in wind speed while minimizing control intricacy and improving grid current transient response while ensuring the various grid connection standards such as IEEE 519 and IEC61400-21. Utilizing a fourth order generalized integrator ensures balanced grid currents, unity power factor, harmonic mitigation, and precise rotor speed estimation under grid deviations, load unbalances, and variation in wind system. The proposed system offers a viable solution for sensorless wind power integration while maintaining the power quality, such a system is seldom reported. Additionally, a thorough closed-loop stability is analyzed here. Simulation results highlight its superior performance during steady-state and dynamic conditions. Real-time testing on the Opal-RT OP4510 platform confirms its effectiveness under practical scenarios. Comprehensive comparative analysis with some recent effective state-of-the-art systems demonstrates the system’s superior performance even under abnormal grid voltages irrespective of local nonlinear load, the presented wind power system is observed to adhere to various renewable energy integration standards strictly.
