Control of Black-Fly (Diptera: Simuliidae) in the Municipality of Vacaria – RS
Objective: The objective of this study was to control some infestations of simulídeos (black-fly) in the municipality of Vacaria-RS. Furthermore, this work aims to raise awareness and encourage owners of areas with a greater incidence of conservation of natural ecosystems. Theoretical Framework: Species of hematophagous simulídeos cause discomfort due to the intensity of their bites, as they interfere with the quality of life of people and animals. Economic activities such as agriculture, livestock and tourism, which are located close to a lotic environment, are harmed by the action of simulids. Method: Based on visits to properties and on-site observations, together with Vacaria Environmental Surveillance Technicians, small rural properties were found with agricultural production close to water resources. Control actions were organized by analyzing each case, which covered simple, preventive processes, such as cleaning the infested area, basic sanitation, building a resting place for animals away from water sources and replacing riparian vegetation, as well as repopulating rivers with predatory species of insect, as well as more complex methods such as the use of biolarvicides. Results and Discussion: As black-fly larvae and pupae were found in most of the sections inspected, the technique to be applied was defined, which consists of mechanical management and, when necessary, interference with biological management using Bti, following the cycles pre-determined by Technical Standard. Research Implications: The municipality under analysis has many outbreaks of infestation in the rural perimeter, where it does not have a large population, but a high degree of pollution in its waterways. This occurs due to the lack of basic sanitation, inadequate management of agricultural and livestock waste, in addition to poor solid waste management. Originality/Value: Studies and combating the black-fly are socioeconomically relevant, as they have marked anthropophilia and their bites cause intense itching and irritation, which can culminate in severe immunological reactions. Therefore, it affects housing activities in rural areas, tourism and agriculture.
