Handheld snapshot hyperspectral video spectroscopy for precision viticulture
The utility of handheld snapshot imaging spectroscopy is demonstrated with the Living Optics development kit for monitoring vine health and estimating grape ripeness and yield through a 5-month project with a JoJo’s Digital vineyard. Vine health metrics were calculated using band-ratio techniques and augmented with computer vision-based image segmentation, which were then compared with weather and soil data from sensors in the vineyard after georeferencing. Experiments on non-contact grape yield and sugar content estimation are compared to refractometry measurements. We show the value of this to agronomists as a precursor to adoption of automated ground or UAV monitoring techniques for improved harvest yield prediction and adaptive picking. Whilst also providing hyperspectral datasets of vineyard and table grapes for the research community.
