Accurate computational aberration correction of volumetric optical coherence tomography based on bi-pupil imaging formulation and simultaneous estimation of multiple aberration orders

This study investigates digital aberration correction (DAC) in optical coherence tomography (OCT), addressing challenges in high-resolution imaging due to defocus and aberrations. A DAC method based on OCT image formation theory is developed, simulating wavefront errors at pupils to calculate the system response function and obtain a deconvolution filter. The approach is applied to in vivo human eye volumetric imaging, comparing bi-pupil-based and conventional correction methods. Experiments using a 1-μm swept-source OCT system demonstrate improved image quality, with the bi-pupil-based method showing superior performance in visualizing photoreceptor mosaics and retinal capillaries. This technique offers efficient estimation and correction of volumetric data in point-scanning OCT with systematic aberrations.
