Self-configuring high-speed multiplane light conversion

We demonstrate wavefront shaping with a newly developed type of spatial light modulator (SLM) known as a phase light modulator (PLM). This device blends the high efficiency of liquid crystal SLMs with the fast switching rates of digital micromirror devices (DMDs). We showcase in-situ aberration correction and control of light transport through complex media, specifically high-speed wavefront shaping through a multimode optical fiber. Given their unrivaled combination of megapixel resolution, high switching speed, and high diffraction efficiency, we expect PLMs to find applications in a range of fields, including adaptive optics, optogenetics, and holographic display technology.
