Single-shot 3D imaging of laser ablation at 1 million frames per second

We present a high-speed multi-projection framing camera-based imaging system designed for capturing rapid dynamic events within a single acquisition. It utilizes a spinning mirror that laterally displaces sub-images across a large area camera and a picosecond pulsed fiber-coupled laser that provides low speckle strobe light illumination of the scene. The sample scene is illuminated from several angles, generating multiple projections that are vertically stacked on the camera sensor, which are then utilized to reconstruct a pseudo-3D representation of the scene. To ensure a high-quality final frame sequence, the initial image undergoes preprocessing that corrects any geometric distortions, adjusts for variations in sensor pixel sensitivity, and compensates for the field curvature. The individual frames are then aligned and background-corrected. The developed system combines fast imaging speed and high resolution, enabling the capture of fast-dynamic events in various applications.
