Failure of Heat Exchanger Glued Plates
This work is a failure analysis carried out on plates of a heat exchanger made of AISI 316/UNS S31600 austenitic stainless steel that failed due to stress corrosion cracking (SCC) after maintenance. The cracks in the plates were detected by penetrant liquid testing beneath the seals that separated and sealed the plates of the heat exchanger. The cracks were located near evidence of adhesive between plate and seal. The metallographic analysis showed clearly that the origins of the cracks were located beneath the adhesive of the seals. The fractography showed an intergranular pattern.
