Ferroelectric nanophotonics: electro-optic active metasurfaces
Ferroelectric oxides such as lithium niobate play a pivotal role in enabling precise electrical control of the intensity, frequency, and phase of an optical signal. Here, we report on the experimental electro-optic beam manipulation of near infrared light using silicon-on-lithium-niobate tunable metasurfaces. Our device incorporates high-quality factor guided mode resonances for efficient beam manipulation by electrically driven, independent phase control of their constituent subwavelength elements. By careful design of the electrostatic and optical fields in our device, we can achieve phase tunability of > 230°, enabling advanced beam shaping functionalities such as fast dynamic beam steering, holography, and lensing.
