Plasmonics: a path towards HOT infrared detectors
Increasing the operating temperature while enhancing the detectivity D∗ is paramount for the advancement of HgCdTe infrared detectors. We present multiphysics TCAD simulations demonstrating how plasmonic resonances can enable submicron-thick HgCdTe absorbers to operate up to 260 K in the mid-infrared band (MWIR, λ ∈ [3, 5] μm), promising D∗ more than twofold compared to those provided by conventional 5 μm-thick absorbers, with comparable responsivity. Different nanostructured surfaces are presented as solutions suitable for either covering the entire MWIR, or for narrow-band detectors.
