Broadband intermodal four-wave mixing in a fully integrated Si-rich silicon nitride wavelength converter

Nonlinear mixing of optical waves is a powerful tool for the generation of new frequency components originating from fields that co-propagate in a phase-matched manner in a waveguide, and four-wave mixing in third-order nonlinearity media is an established technique for achieving this. Four-wave mixing between waves propagating in different modes of the same waveguide offers the potential for broadband operation while maintaining a relatively simple waveguide design. Here, we employ intermodal four-wave mixing in a few-mode silicon-rich silicon nitride waveguide and have designed on-chip mode converters and couplers, both to combine the different fields and separate them at the output. This talk will present the chip design and the experiments that have benefitted from the broadband nonlinear mixing.
