Switchable directionality in the emission of a coupled nanolaser array

Coupled nanolaser array constitute a platform of choice for the joined study of nonlinear dynamics and non-Hermitian physics. We study the synchronization of two integrated III-V photonic-crystal nanolasers distantly interacting via an unique SOI waveguide. In certain parameter range, bistable states of the emission power are associated with a certain directionality of the emission in the waveguide with, e.g. one state associated with bidirectional emission and the other state associated with unidirectional emission. Such phenomenon can be exploited for the realization of flip-flop memories, or for the study of nonreciprocally coupled oscillator arrays.
