Effective Rabi frequency in quantum cascade lasers and its role in the origin of harmonic frequency combs
We derive an Effective Rabi Frequency (ERF) in a semiconductor laser, starting from a full set of effective semiconductor Maxwell-Bloch equations in the unidirectional ring configuration. In the case of multimode Quantum Cascade Lasers (QCLs) this provides a physical interpretation for the still puzzling phenomenon of spontaneous formation of harmonic frequency combs (HFCs) in these lasers. Our theoretical and numerical results indicate that HFCs emerge from continuous wave instability in QCLs due to a resonance between a cavity mode and the ERF.
