Numerical investigation of volume holographic waveguides for application to AR/MR glasses

In this study, virtual images of AR/MR glasses using volume-holographic waveguides were numerically investigated. Unlike surface-relief gratings that require multiple layers, volume holograms enable single-layer waveguides with higher diffraction efficiency, thereby enhancing light efficiency. However, varying the interaction volumes results in non-uniform light intensity across the field of view. To address this issue, a line-symmetric image input method was introduced. This method utilizes an input image with a line-symmetric shape to balance the luminance distribution within the field of view. We discuss the properties of the virtual images observed using our method.

Abstract

In this study, virtual images of AR/MR glasses using volume-holographic waveguides were numerically investigated. Unlike surface-relief gratings that require multiple layers, volume holograms enable single-layer waveguides with higher diffraction efficiency, thereby enhancing light efficiency. However, varying the interaction volumes results in non-uniform light intensity across the field of view. To address this issue, a line-symmetric image input method was introduced. This method utilizes an input image with a line-symmetric shape to balance the luminance distribution within the field of view. We discuss the properties of the virtual images observed using our method.
