Single-frequency VECSEL core

Trapped-ion quantum computing is one of the forerunning approaches that heavily relies on availability of precision single-frequency, narrow linewidth lasers across the spectrum. In this work we demonstrate the development of vertical-external-cavity surface-emitting laser (VECSEL) platform and VECSEL core modules to address Barium ion atomic transitions. The developed high-power VECSEL cores with intracavity frequency doubling demonstrate sub-100 kHz linewidths featuring robust environmental protection, an integrated intensity stabilization loop, and internal piezo actuator interface. The latter is used for frequency locking to an external reference to facilitate further linewidth reduction and to compensate frequency drift. VECSEL cores presented in this work are designed for photoionization and cooling transitions of Ba at 553 nm and 493 nm, respectively. Further work is focused on providing the full coverage of Ba ion with VECSEL core technology. The unique combination of VECSEL emission properties makes it a very attractive choice for other quantum technology applications.
