A study on the characteristics of Family Rituals (Garye-eonhae) published in the Wonju province in the 17th century
It was not easy to independently make woodblocks and publish books during the Joseon Dynasty. In 1632, Shin Deuk-yeon(申得淵, 1585-1647), the governor of Gangwon-do, published “Family Rituals”(Garye-eonhae, 家禮諺解) in the Wonju region of Gangwon-do. This book was published by woodblock printing the manuscript of Zhu Xi(朱熹)’s “Family Rituals”(朱子家禮, Garye) by his father, Shin-sik(申湜, 1551-1623), who was a provincial governor in Gangwon-do. Publication of books in the region was mainly done by royal order or according to personal needs such as literary collections and genealogy. The direction of sharing is also mostly from central to regional areas. Considering this historical background, the publication of “Family Rituals” is very noteworthy. This is because in this case, the book was independently translated and published by an individual. Furthermore, this book was presented to the king, republished by a central agency, and widely read. This study aims to examine the publication flow and printing culture of Hangeul documents during the Joseon Dynasty, and the status of published editions in the Wonju province of Gangwon-do. And this study seeks to introduce the publication background, bibliographic features, and linguistic features of “Family Rituals”.
