A Study of Heterotopic Spaces in Contemporary Art - Focusing on the Works of Philippe Parreno
This paper aims to analyze the characteristics of contemporary art space from the perspective of French philosopher Michel Paul Foucault's 'Heterotopia', focusing on the work of Philippe Parreno. The definition and research of space have been a major topic in philosophy, and many philosophers define the concept of space in the context of the times. Just as French philosopher Michel Foucault called the present era the 'age of space', the search for space continues in the realm of art. Foucault defined a utopia that exists in a reality different from what we face on a daily basis as heterotopia. Modern visual art works in a complex and interactive ring, which is a heterotopic space advocated by Foucault and which has hybrid, heterogeneous, and polymorphic characteristics. The French artist Philippe Parreno defines a heterotopic aspect in this contemporary art field, analyzing how heterotopic characteristics are realized in his concept of art spaces, and exploring the possibility of contemporary art spaces. The artistic space embodied by Parreno is interactive, and this heterotopic space is multi-layered, fluid, and attempts to interact with visitors. In other words, a heterotopic exhibition venue was triggered by interaction with visitors, which is meaningful as an example of the amplification of the concept and possibility of a contemporary art space. The contemporary art space is evolving, becoming more multi-layered, and it is hoped that research on the 'post-heterotopia' art space beyond 'heterotopia' will increase in scope in the future.
