ASSOCIATION OF METABOLIC SYNDROME IN PATIENTS TREATED WITH ATYPICAL ANTIPSYCHOTICS.

Background : Second generation or Atypical Antipsychotics are preferred group of drugs for treating psychotic illness because of their fewer Extrapyramidal side effects. However, development of Metabolic derangement is a serious concern leading to nonadherence and poor treatment outcome. Early Detection and prompt intervention could avoid serious Cardiovascular morbidity. :To compare the metabolic changes in patients treated with atypical antipsychotics - Risp Objectives eridone vs olanzapine using the parameters: waist circumference, Blood pressure, Triglycerides , HDL, Fasting blood sugar Materials And Methods : Forty patients newly started on Risperidone (n=20) or Olanzapine (n=20) were included in this study. They were investigated for fasting lipid profile and fasting blood glucose at baseline and 3 months of Olanzapine or Risperidone treatment. Waist circumference and Blood pressure of the participants were noted in the beginning and after 3 months of Antipsychotic therapy . Change from the Baseline of all the parameters were Statistically analysed and compared between the two groups . Of all 40 patients 23(57.5%) were males . The mean age of the pati Results: ents was 39.5 + 11.3 years. 17 patients (42.5%) were diagnosed with Schizophrenia. At 12 weeks, Both the groups showed statistically significant changes in waist circumference, Triglyceride level, HDL level and Fasting Blood glucose level from baseline. Between Risperidone and olanzapine group , HDL and FBS levels were more deranged in olanzapine group. Overall at the end of 12 weeks, 7 patients (4 females in olanzapine group and 3 females in risperidone group) developed metabolic syndrome. The changes in the waist circumference, TG level Conclusion: s and blood pressure were same between Risperidone and olanzapine. HDL and FBS levels were more deranged in olanzapine group. All the 7 patients who developed metabolic syndrome at the end of 12 weeks are females.
