Perceptions of Three-Dimensionality on the Rorschach and Experience of the Self in the World

Abstract: The three-dimensional (3D) Rorschach variables – Vista and Form Dimension (FD) – traditionally have been interpreted as indicative of introspection: Vista as negative self-inspection and FD as healthy introspection. However, these interpretations were called into question by construct validity meta-analyses. Using a series of systematic reviews, we update existing meta-analytic findings to examine the construct validity of these 3D variables and the merits of combining them into a single variable. We situate the findings in the context of contemporary introspection terminology and research, paying special attention to their response process overlap with the assessment method of the validation criterion. Research supported FD as indicative of an adaptive ability to cope by distancing oneself from distressing experiences (e.g., as in dissociation). Research support for FD as indicative of healthy introspection was lacking. Vista was related to multiple criteria associated with rumination, including chronic stressors and heightened physiological stress response and slow return to baseline. The inclusion of Vista on the suicide risk index was supported but that of FD was not. Consistent with their response process, articulating a 3D visual perception was associated with more advanced cognitive abilities. Their associations with different validation criteria suggest they target distinct constructs, arguing against combining them into a single 3D variable.
