Manifestation of Anxiety and Depression in Individuals
The exact cause of Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) remains incompletely understood. Current hypotheses suggest that fluctuations in neurotransmitter levels, including serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine, contribute to alterations in patients' psychological states. This case study examines the manifestations of anxiety and depression in Nishay, a 22-year-old male from a rural background residing in Bhopal for work. Nishay exhibits symptoms of anxiety and depression that have persisted for several years, alongside multiple health conditions. As the eldest child in his family, he bears significant familial responsibilities, contributing to stress, anxiety, loss of interest in activities, poor appetite, sleep disturbances, anger issues, and occasional self-harm. Despite practicing mindfulness, breathing exercises, and Jacobson's Progressive Muscle Relaxation (JPMR), as well as engaging in yoga and physical exercise, Nishay continues to experience debilitating symptoms that disrupt his social, personal, and professional life. Diagnostic tools, including the Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Self-Injury Questionnaire (SIQ), and Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire (EDE-Q), were used to assess the severity of his conditions. The results confirmed significant levels of anxiety, depression, eating disorders, and self-destructive behaviors. This study underscores that anxiety and depression are not merely states of mind that can be alleviated through physical exercise or positive thinking alone. Instead, they involve a complex interplay of psychological and physiological factors, including chemical imbalances in the brain, which can lead to persistent and debilitating symptoms. By exploring Nishay’s case in detail, this study highlights the broader implications of these conditions and emphasizes the need for comprehensive treatment approaches. The findings suggest that while physical therapy alone cannot cure GAD or depression, it may help alleviate some physical symptoms associated with these conditions.
