Embracing Digital Twin Technology to Enhance Efficacy of Industrial Symbiosis: A Path to Sustainability

The need to transition to a Circular Economy (CE) has prompted the industry to embrace strategies like Industrial Symbiosis (IS). IS promotes sustainable resource management by facilitating materials exchange, energy, water, and by-products between industries, converting waste streams into valuable inputs across interconnected firms. This paper seeks to present how IS networks, guided by the principles of Reduction, Reuse, Recycle, Recover, Redesign, and Remanufacture (D6R framework) may lead to efficient use of resources and waste minimisation. In this work, different industries were surveyed to explore how the D6R principles can be used to promote Sustainable Resource Management through the collaboration and exchange of resources to create a closed-loop system ensuring waste from one process or industry becomes valuable input for another. Synergistic networks are formed within the clusters and waste is reused, reduced, and recycled. adopting these principles ensures longevity of the natural resources as well as a more sustainable and resilient future. Moreover, with the emergence of the fourth Industrial Revolution, the industry is moving towards Smart Manufacturing and The Digital Twin Technology (DTT) can be applied in industry to enhance efficacy of IS towards sustainability. Digital Twin Technology DTT combined with the D6R Framework can create a powerful approach for Industrial Symbiosis. By integrating DTT with the D6R principles, firmss can monitor and optimize resource flows, prioritize sustainable practices, and initiate collaborative adeptness across the symbiotic network. This paper seeks to explore the efficacy of DTT in IS towards sustainable use and management of resources. By harnessing Digital Twin Technology, industries engaged in symbiotic networks can achieve operational efficiency, save cost, and attaion environmental sustainability. The ability to monitor, replicate, and optimise resource flows in real time allows companies to achieve sustainability. As DTT continues to progress and becomes more accessible, its contribution to the efficacy of IS will only progress, leading to sustainably effective industrial ecosystems.
