Design of Compact Bio-Inspired Antenna for 5G Wireless Communications and Systems
The RF front-end system of mobile communication systems includes an antenna, filter, and amplifier section. Today, it is crucial to reduce the size of this RF front-end system without compromising performance. One way to achieve this is by reducing the size or footprint of the antenna. In this innovative study, we have developed a novel patch antenna design inspired by shapes found in insect antennas, specifically tailored for 5G communications. Drawing inspiration from beetles, which compensate for their limited vision with antennas on their heads, we created an antenna based on serrated antenna structures. This biomimetic design has enabled us to develop an exceptionally high-performance antenna, offering an impressive gain of 4.677 dB and a wide bandwidth of 4.69 GHz. With compact dimensions of 30 mm by 30 mm, this patch antenna is ideal for mobile applications. Our simulations and tests have validated its effectiveness across a broad range of 5G frequencies, with a resonance frequency of 30.5 GHz.
