Investigation of the Blending Effect of Hydrogen on an Electric Generator Diesel Engine Performance

This research investigates the impact of adding hydrogen to a diesel engine of an electric generator to enhance combustion efficiency, improve engine performance, and reduce emissions. Experiments were conducted at constant engine speed with hydrogen flow rate of 0.3 L/min, and under varying engine loads from 0 to 4 kW. The study measured the brake thermal efficiency (BTE), the specific fuel consumption (SFC), and emissions of CO, CO<inf xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">2</inf>, and NOx. The results showed that incorporating hydrogen significantly improved BTE and SFC and reduced CO<inf xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">2</inf> and NOx emissions, indicating that hydrogen addition to conventional fuels can extend the combustibility range and reduce overall emissions.
