Production of Sustainable Energy Storage Biocomposites

The incorporation of phase change materials (PCMs) into biomass supports promotes sustainable bio-products. Pomegranate peel (PP) waste was used as a supporting material, with paraffin wax (PW) as PCM. The manufacturing process was optimized using response surface methodology (RSM) and Box-Behnken Design (BBD) to ensure the maximum PCM loading ratio. The effective factors in this process were density, impregnation time, and particle size. Analysis of variance indicated that the proposed quadratic model fitted well the experimental results with predicted and adjusted coefficients of 0.81 and 0.94 respectively. Optimal conditions were found to be 0.5 g/cm3 density, 0.315 mm particle size, and 30 minutes impregnation time. At these conditions PCM loading rate was almost 50%. This bio-composite offers a sustainable option for thermal energy storage applications.
