Fuzzy Control of a Universal Power Conditioner (UPQC): Application to the Mauritanian Wind Power System
Harmonics, reactive power, and voltage dips have a detrimental effect on electrical equipment. Several methods such as passive and active filters have been developed to compensate for electrical disturbances, but these methods present difficulties due to the increasing number of non-linear applications. The UPQC (Unified Power Quality Conditioner) is a new topology for resolving load voltage and current imperfections. This article applies UPQC to harmonic elimination, reactive power compensation, and power factor improvement. The technique of reference estimation of instantaneous active and reactive power with a multi-variable filter (FMV-PQ) is used to reduce the number of mathematical calculations. A non-linear control based on the Fuzzy Logic Pulse Width Technique (SVM) is presented to perfectly identify disturbances. Furthermore, a MATLAB/Simulink simulation model has been developed to highlight the effectiveness of the nonlinear control strategy. A range of simulations are performed and examined across different operating conditions. The results obtained show a significant reduction in reactive power, which is decreased by 85%. Both the total harmonic distortion (THD) of the voltage and the harmonic distortion of the current are effectively limited to 0.85%, fully complying with IEEE-519 standards. Furthermore, the compensation of voltage dips proves effective, leading to a notable improvement in the overall power quality.
