Voltage-Compensation-Based Hybrid-Capacitor Converter With Partial Power Conversion for Pulsed Power Suppression

A hybrid-capacitor convertor, which is composed of a passive capacitor and an active capacitor connected in series, is proposed for pulsed power suppression. The voltage of both the active capacitor and the passive capacitor can vary over a wide range, while the voltage variations of the two capacitors are in opposite directions. Therefore, pulsed power can be suppressed by the hybrid-capacitor with the voltage variation of capacitors, while the output voltage of the hybrid-capacitor can maintain constant with the series connection and voltage complementary characteristics of the two capacitors. Since majority of the pulsed power is directly absorbed or released by the passive capacitor, and only a small part of the pulsed power is processed by the active capacitor, the power rating and loss of the active capacitor circuit are reduced significantly. The structure, circuit implementations, operation principles, and control of the hybrid capacitor are analyzed in detail. Design considerations of the capacitors are presented. Experimental tests have been conducted to verify the effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed hybrid capacitor solutions.
