Finite Element Modelling of CFST Columns with Large Cross‐sectional Aspect Ratio

Abstract The concrete‐filled wide rectangular steel tubular (CFWRST) member has garnered increasing attention in engineering design. Generally, the cross‐sectional aspect ratio of CFWRST column ranges from 2 to 3, which surpasses the limits set by previous studies, where ratios were generally less than 2.0. Finite element (FE) analysis is extensively employed to explore the performances of concrete‐filled rectangular steel tubular (CFRST) columns, necessitating calibration of numerous parameters against test results. This paper investigates the constitutive model for concrete in CFWRST columns using ABAQUS. Building upon the original constitutive model of confining concrete in CFRST members, a new model tailored for simulating CFWRST columns is introduced. This model incorporates parameters calibrated against existing test data. Furthermore, its suitability for simulating CFWRST columns under cyclic loading is verified, demonstrating its potential to effectively broaden the using scope of the model suitable for CFRST specimens with higher aspect ratio.
