Study on the Limit State Reliability Indices of Bridge Piers under Chloride Ion Erosion and Freeze‐Thaw Environments
Abstract Uncertainties such as chloride ion erosion and freeze‐thaw cycle damage are the causes of the resistance deterioration of underwater bridge piers. This uncertainty makes it impossible to represent structural reliability through a simple linear relationship. Instead, probability‐based reliability theory provides a scientific means to quantitatively assess reliability. Therefore, this paper outlines the basic concepts and principles of structural reliability theory. Using the central point method, it derives the reliability index calculation equations for the normal service limit states of resistance to chloride ion penetration and freeze‐thaw resistance. In addition, using engineering examples, the paper presents the time‐variation curves of the reliability index for bridge piers under chloride ion erosion and freeze‐thaw cycle damage. It predicts future trends in these deteriorations, providing a reference for bridge maintenance work.
