Mechanical Analysis and Material Optimization of the Continuous Deck in the Simple‐supported Beam Bridges under Vehicle Load

Abstract The continuous deck in the simple‐supported beam bridges is an important component that is prone to cracking and water seepage under the vehicle load. Therefore, this paper provides a detailed mechanical analysis of the continuous deck in this bridge. First, a mechanical model including the continuous deck and the main beams is established by the finite element method (FEM). Second, the vehicle loads that result in the maximum bending moment in the continuous deck are presented. Third, the stress and strain in the continuous deck are calculated, and the results indicate that the maximum stress on the top of the continuous deck may exceed the tensile strength of ordinary concrete. Finally, Ultra‐High Performance Concrete (UHPC) is used to optimize the material by improving the tensile strength of the continuous deck and ensuring the safety and durability of the bridges.
