Study of the Influence of Gate Slot on the Flow‐induced Vibration of an Emergency Sluice Gate

Abstract Pumped storage power station is generally installed at a relatively low altitude, resulting in a large negative value of the suction height. In the process of opening and closing the sluice gate, the water flow will face a variety of complex flow states which is easy to form turbulence and cause flow‐induced vibration. In order to study the influence of gate slot on the flow‐induced vibration of an emergency sluice gate, the pressure distribution of flow around the sluice gate and the characteristics of the sluice gate for both of the models with and without gate slots are compared. Based on the principle of fluid‐solid coupling, ANSYS Workbench software was used to study the flow‐induced vibration characteristics. Firstly, the flow field Model I without considering the gate slot and the flow field Model II considering the gate slots are constructed. Then pressure distribution, velocity field as well as the stress and displacement at the bottom of the faceplate under three different openings (10%, 50%, 90%) of Model I and Model II are compared. The results show that gate slots has a significant impact on the distribution of negative pressure areas and flow velocity; the maximum stress at the sluice gate faceplate of Model II considering the gate slots are lower than that of Model I without considering the gate slots. Applying sluice gate‐gate slot system to evaluate the flow‐induced vibration characteristics of high‐head plane emergency sluice gates in pumped storage projects more accurately and comprehensively. Therefore, it is necessary to take the influence of the gate slot into consideration when study flow‐induced vibration characteristics of the plane emergency sluice gates.

Abstract Pumped storage power station is generally installed at a relatively low altitude, resulting in a large negative value of the suction height. In the process of opening and closing the sluice gate, the water flow will face a variety of complex flow states which is easy to form turbulence and cause flow‐induced vibration.
