ECONOMICS OF CRIME: THE IMPACT OF UNEMPLOYMENT ON THE INCREASE IN CRIMINAL ACTIVITY

The article is devoted to the study of the relationship between the unemployment rate and criminal activity from the point of view of economic theories of criminal behavior. The mechanisms of the influence of unemployment on the crime rate are analyzed, including a decrease in the opportunity costs of committing crimes, an increase in social tension and the expansion of the shadow economy. The differences in the impact of unemployment on economic and violent crimes are considered, as well as the influence of the social protection system, the level of education and economic inequality on the dynamics of criminal activity. State strategies aimed at reducing the criminogenic effect of unemployment are studied, including employment programs, measures to reintegrate former criminals and economic incentives to reduce crime. A conclusion is made about the need for an integrated approach to regulating the labor market and social policy in order to minimize criminal activity during periods of economic instability.
