Inflammatory Marker and Severity in COVID-19
Abstract: COVID-19, an infectious disease caused by betacoronavirus, has become a global pandemic. This disease quickly spreads through respiratory droplets, triggering inflammation and even cytokine storms. Various degrees of severity can occur in COVID-19 cases. Various proinflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines and chemokines can be released, controlling the severity. Several known inflammatory biomarkers include C-reactive Protein (CRP), Procalcitonin, Interleukine (IL)-6, IL-10, Krebs von den Lungen (KL)-6, Ferritin, Tumor Necrosis Factor (TNF)- Alpha, Interferon (INF)-Beta, Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate (ESD), Ferritin, LDH, and D-dimer serving as guides in determining the severity of COVID-19. Additionally, chest X-ray abnormalities can be used to determine the severity of COVID-19 using scoring systems such as The Radiologic of Assessment Lung Edema (RALE), and Brixia. Although chest CT scans are superior in assessing lung abnormalities in COVID-19, scoring systems can still be quickly and cost-effectively used to determine lung-related issues associated with COVID-19. These markers were expected to aid in the accurate management of COVID-19 patients.
