The local index theorem and the Bismut-Cheeger η-form

In this paper, we provide an introduction to the local Atiyah-Singer index theorem along with its various generalizations. Furthermore, we present a survey of the recent progress of the Bismut-Cheeger η-form and review its applications in differential K-theory.
