An Improved Flux Weakening Control of Wound Rotor Synchronous Starter Generator Based on Single-Phase AC Excitation for Aviation Application

Aviation electrification has been in the spotlight over the past decade as a major innovation in aviation technology. The wound rotor synchronous starter generator (WRSSG) has been widely utilized in aviation integrated starter-generator (ISG) system. In order to solve the problem of high peak power and low efficiency of WRSSG in the starting mode, an improved flux weakening control is proposed to ensure reliable and efficient starting control of the WRSSG, based on the single-phase alternating current (AC) excitation method. The control method of single-phase AC excitation in the starting mode is analyzed and designed in detail. In the proposed flux weakening control method, the phase voltage of main generator (MG) armature is added into the excitation control of the main exciter (ME) in real time, enabling adaptive flux weakening control during the high-speed period of the starting process. In addition, this article details the approach for designing regulator parameters of the proposed control method. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed method is proved by experimental results, which significantly reduces the peak power and improves the efficiency during the starting process.
