First Global Deployment of Coiled Tubing Conveyed Electrically Activated Inflatable Packer Set Over Perforations to Selectively Stimulate Narrow Interval Between Highly Anisotropic Formations: Iraq Case Study
Abstract Mechanical diversion using packers remains the most effective method for pinpoint treatments in reservoirs with high anisotropic properties. The correct surface conditions at the packer setting location are critical to a successful operation. Challenging environments, such as openhole (OH) or over the top of perforations, often lack ideal conditions. The execution of the first electrically activated inflatable packer (e-IP) to be set over perforations is discussed. An injector well with three perforated intervals faced serious issues related to poor sweep efficiency attributed to the lack of vertical conformance. The reservoir's extreme heterogeneity, with 80% of the injection directed into the lowermost interval, ruled out a chemical diversion as a suitable option. A selective stimulation treatment was necessary to address these conditions. The innovative e-IP with multi-set capabilities was proposed, along with a modular sensing bottomhole assembly (MSBHA) equipped with gamma ray (GR), casing collar locator (CCL), downhole pressure (external and internal), and weight on bit (WOB) to help ensure accurate placement of the element within the narrow window. Operational execution required setting the e-IP twice in a single run to stimulate the two upper formations. In addition, the second set required at least 20 cm of the e-IP to be placed over the perforations for the best case with the element fully centralized. The 3-in. e-IP was set twice in a 7-in. casing with an expansion ratio of 2.06:1 (the second set was partially over the perforations), which allowed selective stimulation of the two upper intervals and successfully held 1,300 psi of differential pressure during the 15% HCl treatment. An outer diameter (OD) increase of 12% (3.36 in.) after deflation ensured the safe recovery of the element to the surface through the completion's minimum restriction of 3.46 in. Injectivity improved from 6,336 to 18,720 bbl/day, and the injectivity index increased from 1.135 to 2.86 bbl/day/psi. The multi-set capability and durability of the packer element, combined with the accuracy provided by real-time MSBHA sensors, enabled precise treatments in a challenging downhole environment with a high level of confidence. This approach enhanced operational control to an optimal level, effectively avoiding failures that were previously tolerated in these highly complex situations.
