Development of a compact in-situ 3He neutron spin filter at J-PARC

This study developed a compact and portable in-situ 3 He neutron spin filter ( in-situ 3 He NSF) utilizing spin-exchange optical pumping at Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility (MLF) of Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC). This polarizing device aims to enhance the utilization of polarized pulsed neutrons. The length of the in-situ 3 He NSF was 320 mm, making it well-suited for installation in a wide range of neutron instruments, including those with space constraints. Its performance as an incident neutron polarizer was evaluated at MLF, where it achieved a 3 He polarization exceeding 0.6, corresponding to a neutron polarization greater than 0.8 at 1.8 Å. Notably, the in-situ 3 He NSF demonstrated stable operation for 110 h. These outcomes signify that the developed in-situ 3 He NSF facilitates and promotes polarized pulsed neutron experiments.
