Decel to Excel: A Technical Framework for Introducing Deceleration in the Clinic
SYNOPSIS: Deceleration, which is characterized by frequent and rapid reductions in momentum, often followed by sudden changes of direction, combined with the constraints of time and space, creates an ideal scenario for serious noncontact lower-limb injuries (ie, anterior cruciate ligament tear, tendon ruptures, soft tissue injuries). It is common to initiate deceleration tasks in mid- to late-stage rehabilitation and on the field. The aim of this Viewpoint is to explain deceleration and its importance in sports injury rehabilitation. We argue for introducing deceleration tasks earlier in rehabilitation and provide a framework for training deceleration in clinical settings for return to sport. JOSPT Open 2025;3(3):210-213.
