Resilience amid Adversity: Lived Experiences of Filipino Families Navigating Chronic Illness

This study explored the lived experiences of Filipino families as they navigated the complexities of chronic illnesses, employing a qualitative phenomenological approach. The participants consisted of Filipino families with at least one member diagnosed with a chronic illness. Inclusion criteria were: (1) Families with a member diagnosed with a chronic illness for at least six months, (2) Families serving as primary caregivers to the ill member, and (3) Willingness to participate in in-depth interviews. A total of ten families were selected after data saturation was reached. Data collection involved in-depth semi-structured interviews, focusing on family dynamics, coping strategies, and sources of resilience. The findings revealed that caregiving for a family member with chronic illness in the Philippines resulted in emotional stress, shifts in family dynamics, and financial strain. Despite these challenges, seeking medical support and receiving family support provided crucial relief. Caregivers developed resilience, compassion, and personal growth, ultimately strengthening familial bonds.
