The Birth of Korea and Memory War : Myth of ROK’s Birth tainted by Historical Negation
The Birth of Korea, released on Jan. 1, 2024, leads to the battlefield of memory, not history wars. The message of this film is clear. Although Syngman Rhee contributed greatly to the founding president who gave birth to the Republic of Korea, the people of the Republic of Korea are not familiar with this fact. And the reason why he is not familiar with his achievements in Korea today, but rather, rumors about him spread is the result of the so-called “Erasing Syngman Rhee”, or the history war led by the left. In this essay, rather than pointing out the facts of The Birth of Korea, I would like to show what this film intends by following their narratives in detail and analyzing them. Rather than criticizing the content or pointing out errors based on outside the film, I want to show tension and conflict within the narrative or reveal what the narrative aims for.
