CLINICAL AND RADIOLOGICAL FEATURES OF PULMONARY TB IN PATIENTS WITH TYPE I OR II DIABETES MELLITUS
Objective: to study clinical and radiological features of pulmonary TB in patients with type I or II diabetes mellitus (DM). Materials and methods. We carried out a retrospective cohort study of 216 patients. The patients were divided into two groups: group 1 included TB patients with type I DM, group II included TB patients with type II DM. Results. We established that acute onset of TB was typical for patients with type I DM. TB detection at patients’ referrals was also typical for this group of patients. Fever and hemoptysis were more frequently observed in group 1 vs. group 2. Advanced lesions involving 1–2 lobes of the lung were more typical for patients with type II DM. There were no significant differences in bacterioexcretion or lung cavities between the groups. Drug susceptibility was more typical for patients with type II DM. Active endobronchial TB was detected in both groups with the same frequency, however, post-tuberculosis changes in the lungs were more typical for patients with type II DM vs. type I DM. Conclusion. The obtained results have demonstrated significant differences in clinical and radiological presentations of pulmonary TB between patients with type I DM and patients with type II DM.
