Personalized learning with Artificial Intelligence: a case study in a literacy extension project
This article presents a case study on the application of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI) in a literacy extension project focused on Portuguese and mathematics. The research investigates how tools such as ChatGPT and Gemini can be used to personalize educational activities, tailoring the to the specific learning needs of the students in the project. The methodology included the first author's interaction with GAI tools to design activities, followed by the project team’s evaluation and adaptation of materials according to the difficulties observed in the classroom. The results indicate that the use of GAI, when combined with the pedagogical expertise of the team and Prompt Engineering techniques, can significantly improve the quality and suitability of the activities. The study highlights the importance of personalized learning, continuous adaptation of activities to students' needs, Prompt Engineering while reinforcing the role of university extension in pedagogical practice. The study concludes that GAI holds transformative potential in education, provided it is used critically, responsibly, and in alignment with the objectives of extension and learning projects.
